At the turn of the 20th century in a Welsh mining village, Roddy McDowall hopes to find a better life. He leaves his small Welsh town and heads for America, where he joins a buxom blonde and a bi-polar brunette in many adventures with sex and drugs - all gratuitous and unnecessary for plot advancement. Torn between Hollywood and Cardiff, struggling with issues of faith, family, sexuality and good taste, he returns to Wales to find it no longer the pastoral land of his childhood, but a dirty, industrialized wasteland - much like himself.
